What is is that DRIVES you

So my beautiful, beautiful wife and I had just had our 6 month anniversary. When we first got married, we decided to continue marriage counseling for at least the first year, of our wonderful marriage. I love going to our sessions... well usually have to be dragged into them. The funny thing is, after the session, I am loving it so much that I have to be dragged out!

This week I feel like God was speaking to me. I watched David Jay's video, "how to present yourself" , that is on Pro Photo resource (a great resource for info on photography), Then, later that night i went to a counseling session with my wife. I brought up a few of the things that David touched on, that struck me.

What is it that drives you?

Me?

I asked hoping that Matt, our marriage counselor, was going to say "No, I was asking Candice." A million things raced through my head.

The one thing that stuck out in our conversation is motivation. Matt mentioned that there are two ways to motivate yourself, external and internal. He stated how important it is to be internally motivated rather than externally motivated. He explained,

"to be motivated internally is to be motivated within yourself i.e. because it is something that you love, or because of someone that you love; to be externally motivated is basically motivation through comparison of yourself to your peers or through jealousy of their success you attempt to one up them. The dangers of externally or peer motivating yourself are 1. you will never excel higher than whoever it is that you are comparing yourself to, and 2. you are not developing who you really are. "

Immediately I realized how relevant this is to the industry of wedding photography. Have Influences but don't let them drive you, let them influence you. Figure out what it is that you love and let theat drive you! It is so important to develop who you are and to really let it show.

Brad & Jolene: In Love

I'm not sure what we want, but definitely something that screams California!

Totally! i want all of my buddies, back home in Iowa to be jealous... you know picture that scream "HA! I'm here and your not.

I thought that was so funny! They have been married for a few years and wanted pictures that were more up to date with where they were living i.e. California. Plus, some Christmas card photos.

Brad and Jolene are a totally radical couple. I met them through some friends of mine that i shot an engagement session with, and I am so excited to further our friendship. Brad is a financial planner and is now MY financial planner... so if you need one i have a very good recommendation.

Jerimiah & Carrie: A WEDDING

Dust clasped to the mini cooper as I raced down the windy country road.

i think that we are lost!?!

No we are not. Tom-Tom is one my best friends , and i would appreciate it if you would not say such mean things about him .... he IS sitting on the dash in front of us. And P.S. he NEVER lies.

We were on our way to Jeremiah and Carries wedding. It was located in Somis, California, on a beautiful orchard. In the middle of the orchard there is an courtyard that was designed for weddings. The family that owns the orchard, not only hosts the weddings but helps plan weddings as a part of their ministry...which is awesome!

Gabriel Ryan and I shot Jeremiah's wedding as a wedding gift for him. Gabe has known Jeremiah since the 5th grade. It was so cool to see Gabe's genuine happiness for Jeremiah.

Here are a few of my favorite photos:

The wedding day gift!

The "tie sequence" shot by Gabe while i was with the girls.

And the FUN begins!

Jeremiah and Carrie, Candice and I want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for letting us be a part of your special day. We wish you two the best in your future together.

Laborial Day

MARK! Are you crazy!?! It is not Memorial day. It is freaking Labor day!

Ahh, I can't stop calling it that.

All day I called what was Labor day, Memorial day! I could not stop, I tried and tried. So, i decided to rename the day for the better of mankind: Laborial day. We had a blast, our first annual, blazing hot Laborial day.

My wife and I invited all of our newly wed friends, to my in-laws house in Huntington Harbor. We went out on the Duffy, played bocce ball, and Jumped off of the bridge, you know, just your average Laborial day events. After all of the fun and games we settled down an had a BBQ where Gabe shared the secrets to the perfect corn.

As Captain of the Duffy, I promoted my Wifey to First Mate.

Our Bocce game...
